INSTRUMENTAL COMMISSIONS AND PREMIERES

Under the leadership of Scott Stewart, the Atlanta Youth Wind Symphony (1999-present) and the Emory Wind Ensemble (1999-2013) have developed a national reputation for engaging some of the world’s finest composers to write new, original music for the wind band/ensemble medium, as well as contributing to commissioning “consortia” and giving world, national, and regional premieres of new music.

The contribution of valuable musical literature by living composers to the body of wind works is a vital mission of our program, and the pedagogical value of surrounding our students with some of the world’s best artists and allowing them to take part in the “birth” of a new artwork is paramount. An exciting byproduct of this initiative is the promotion and support of AYWS alumni who pursue the study of composition and establish themselves in the professional music world.
